
Sarah Atter is a recent graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester, studying as a scholarship student on their prestigious Joint Course intended for musicians with outstanding practical and academic ability. She was awarded first class degrees at both institutions.
Sarah began playing the flute at the age of eight, later gaining a musical scholarship to Loughborough High School. After winning many classes over the years at various local music festivals, Sarah was named ‘Young Performer of the Year’ a grand total of eight times. Following these successes, Sarah was invited to play at the Millennium Festival in Leeds. She has also progressed three times to the Regional Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year. Sarah continues to enjoy playing as a soloist in recitals. This summer Sarah is playing at the BBC Summer Proms in association with Carte D’Or.
As an orchestral musician, Sarah was principal flute of the Leicestershire Schools’ Symphony Orchestra for three years, and has played flute and piccolo with the Hallé Youth Orchestra for its first two years under Edward Gardner. She plays regularly with the University of Manchester and RNCM orchestras and large ensembles. She has toured to France, Germany and Austria.
Sarah has been part of several flute choirs and other chamber groups, currently playing with the Da Capo Duo (flute and guitar), The Sterling Trio (flute, clarinet and piano) and Northern Flute Quartet. Each of these are available for formal and informal recitals, background music for weddings, corporate events and other occasions and education work. At school, she was part of a quintet which played in the Barbican Centre in London and in Edinburgh. She was also a successful finalist in the National Chamber Music for Schools competition, which culminated in a concert at St. John’s Smith Square, London. She also played at the Millennium Dome as part of the Millennium Festival.
Sarah is committed to using music as a means of creative expression and works in schools, hospitals, hospices, care homes and other venues. She also teaches throughout the North-West. Sarah is interested in Music Management and has worked for Cheltenham International Festival of Music, the Hallé Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic.
