
Rosie Bell, soprano
Born in Carlisle, she attended Trinity school and studied singing with Michael Hancock before taking up a place to read Philosophy and English Literature at the University of Edinburgh. During her time in Edinburgh she trained with Eric von Ibler, and sang with The Holyrood Ensemble, Edinburgh Camerata, and Edinburgh Studio Opera for whom she performed numerous leading roles. After graduating in 2005 Rosie moved to London in to pursue a postgraduate diploma and advanced diploma in vocal performance, studying with John Wakefield and Alistair Young at Trinity College of Music. At ease in both Soprano and Mezzo-soprano registers, her varied roles in opera and operetta include Dido (Purcell, Dido and Aeneas) Therese (Poulenc: Les Mammelles de Tiresias), Anne Truelove (Stravinsky: The Rake's Progress) Lucy (Menotti: The Telephone), Polly Peachum and Lucy Lockit (Britten: The Beggar's Opera), The Teacher (Jegede, Cry of Innocence) Dorabella (Mozart: Cosi Fan Tutte) Mabel (Sullivan: Pirates of Penzance) Pitti Sing (Sullivan: The Mikado) Iolanthe (Sullivan: Iolanthe) and Buttercup (Sullivan: H.M.S. Pinafore). Roles studied with Mary Hill and Robert Aldwinckle under TCM’s opera coaching include La Contessa (Mozart, Marriage of Figaro) Gretel (Humperdinck, Hansel and Gretel) and Amor (Cavalli, L’Egisto). Her solo credits include Haydn (Nelson Mass & St. Nicholas Mass), Mozart (Requiem), Poulenc (Gloria), Durufle (Requiem), Bach (Magnificat & Cantata 141), Vivaldi (Gloria) Handel (Dixit Dominus) and Britten (Our Hunting Fathers) with James Judd and the TCM symphony orchestra.
Rosie graduated with distinction from TCM in 2007 and currently sings for numerous independent projects and opera companies, including the newly formed contemporary music group The Warehouse Ensemble, with whom she recently performed Ruggles' Vox Clamans in Deserto under the baton of Edwin Roxburgh. Other recent engagements include Damon Albarn’s Monkey, Journey to the West for the “Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris and Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Mozart, Exsultate, Jubilate and Vaughan Williams, Serenade to Music for Musique Cordiale, Seillans, and Lehar’s Merry Widow for Pavilion Opera. Rosie will perform the role of Countess Almaviva for Musique Cordiale in 2009. She continues to study privately with Alison Wells.
