Maddy Aldis-Evans (nee Aldis) was born in Leicester. She began playing the oboe at the age of 7 and studied Oboe performance and composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire obtaining a BA (Hons.) degree and ABRSM (merit) in Composition. She was also awarded the BA course prize for academic excellence, and the college prize for Orchestral Composition. The college Sinfonia, conducted by Andrew Mogrelia, premiered her “Four pieces for orchestra”.
Maddy continued her studies at the Royal Northern College of music where she gained a post-graduate diploma in advanced performance and Composition studying Oboe with Jonathon Small (Principal Oboe RLPO) and composition with Dr. Anthony Gilbert. “Claudia” for chamber ensemble was performed at the college and Maddy was awarded the Rawsthorn Prize for composition.
Maddy has worked with many orchestras in the UK inlcuding the CBSO, Halle Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Philharmonia orchestra and Manchester Camerata. She was also Principal oboe for the D'Oyly Cate opera company touring orchestra in 2000. From 2001 to 2005 Maddy was solo Obost with Kammerensemble Cologne, with whom she regularly performed as soloist. Repertoire included Bach's Double concerto for oboe and violin, Vivaldi D minor oboe concerto, Cimerosa C major oboe concerto, Mozart oboe concerto and Albinoni A minor oboe concerto.
Maddy currently lives in Germany where she is Oboist and Cor Anglais player with the Anhaltische Philharmonie in Dessau. She was recently commissioned by the Orchestra’s Horn Quartet, and her solo Oboe piece; “Falling Softly (towards you)”, (written for the composer’s husband Alan Evans) was premiered by the Anhaltische Philharmonie’s Solo Oboist, Uwe Staedter in January 2007. Another commission will be premiered as part of the orchestra's chamber music season in 2009. Maddy has performed regularly in the chamber music season at the Georgium Castle and Gallery in Dessau, repertoire including Poulenc's trio for oboe, basson and piano, a trio sonata by Zelenka, and a trio by Koetsier for oboe, horn and piano. Solo performances have included the Bach double concerto for oboe and violin with the Philharmonie's leader, Martin Schultz in 2006.
Also premiered in 2006 in Dessau is Maddy’s moral tale for children “The witch’s cat who lost her spells” told by wind quintet and narrator. Working for and with children is important to Maddy as a composer. Writing exciting original music for children to perform, she believes, is a sure way to ignite a passion for playing and listening to classical music in the next generation.
Other commissions include “Amid the Barren Hills” for Laurence Perkins and “All the Light” for Anders Chapelong-Jungers (Professor of Flute at the RNCM and at the Conservatoire In Sweden.)
