Rob Eckland - Jazz Piano
Biography
Rob has been studying Commercial Piano and Percussion at the Royal College of Music since 2006, where he is fortunate to be learning and playing with some of the finest players across the UK and beyond. Mike Moran and Charlie Beale have been his Piano Professors, whilst he has been taking tuiton from the likes of Ralph Salmins, Hugh Wilkinson, David Hockings and Andy Smith in the Percussion Faculty.
Rob's work has taken him all over the UK and Europe, in particular France and Germany. He has performed at venues of all sizes including Chelsea Football Club, The Canadian Embassy, The Royal Albert Hall, The Reform Club and The Park Lane Hilton. He has also performed for HRH The Prince of Wales and has played on BBC Television and been broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
Whether it is as a solo 'cocktail' Pianist, or as a band member, Rob simply loves to play. He is currently playing for Harley Kemp, the daughter of Spandeau Ballet and Eastenders star Martin Kemp, and plays regularly with Gospel/Soul sensation Sarah-Jane Lewis. He has his own Trio and Quartet, with whom he gigs with regularly at all kinds of functions, including, for example Weddings, Birthdays and Corporate Business Functions. Further to this, Rob is the founder, arranger and band manager for 'The Funk Soul Brothers', an 11-piece funk band that were created in 2007 with some of the finest young players from the London music colleges.
Musical Theatre is something that Rob loves to be involved in, and has played in the band for many shows. His credits include: West Side Story, Little Shop of Horrors, The Witches of Eastwick, The Hot Mikardo, Follow The Star, Guys 'n' Dolls, Oliver, Kiss Me Kate, High Society, Annie Get Your Gun, Turendot, Eugene Onegin, The Lion Witch and The Wardrobe, Barnum, Caroussel, Yanomamo and Alladin (New Pantomime Productions over the Pantomime Season of '07-'08). Furthermore, he was the Musical Director for productions of Oliver, Happy as a Sandbag, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Best of the Musicals.
As well as Piano, Rob is in huge demand as a Percussion and Drum Kit player. Many of the shows listed above he was employed as the Drum Kit player, and he regularly gigs with Orchestras, Brass Bands and Big Bands across the UK. Furthermore, he was invited to play with the Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra in his first year under the world-famous Bernard Haitink, and projects this year include playing under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Rob's musical education started at just 3 years of age when he began to play the Piano, giving his first concert, by ear, at just 4 years old! He started playing Percussion at 11, and has never looked back. When he was younger, he was a regular with his County Youth Groups and his School Groups. At his school, he also won the prestigious 'Rosebowl' in 2005, beating over 250 other contestants to first prize. He was also awarded the F.W Thomas Prize for 'excellence in Music' for three years running.
Rob plays Piano on his Clavia Nord Stage 88, his Roland RD-700-SX Stage Piano and his Roland SH-201 Synthesizer. Percussion-wise, Rob plays a 5-piece Tama Burbinga Drum Kit, whilst he also owns most Orchestral and Auxhiliary Percussion.
